KENOSHA ⏤ While fasting in Biblical context mostly pertained to seeking something from God, the Wisconsin 6 are using it in the hopes of attaining change sought from man.

On Thursday, March 4, the group led by Pastor Jonathan Barker will take their last bites of food outside of Grace Lutheran Church. After that, they will start a 22-day fast for climate justice in the Wisconsin state budget.

The last bites will take place at the church, 2006 60th St., at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Their first full day of fasting will start March 5. To satisfy the time limit set out, the fast will last until March 26, a release Barker sent Monday states.

Along with Barker, the group includes:

  • Justin Blake;
  • Joe Cardinali;
  • Tory Lowe;
  • Andy Berg;
  • And Jill Ferguson.

Other aspects of Thursday’s event

While the last bite will kick off Thursday’s event, it will be followed by local religious leaders’ blessings of the fast, and a press conference/rally and march.

According to Barker’s release, Building Unity will be leading the march after the conference.

The goal of the entire initiative is to pressure the state Legislature to pass Gov. Tony Evers’ climate justice initiatives in the 2021-2023 state budget.

“The proposed state budget includes funding for renewable energy and jobs, energy efficiency and resiliency, renewable energy and equity, electrified transportation, clean water, and programs for farmers and land conservation,” the release states.

“My heart is full of hope,” Barker added in a released statement. “It’s been amazing to see our diverse and courageous group come together over the last month.  I know that bold people working together can win a livable future, family-sustaining green jobs, clean water to drink, and clean air to breathe for our neighbors.”

Message not limited to Kenosha

The Wisconsin 6 will not be simply keeping their message and events to the confines of Kenosha’s city limits.

During the fast, they will also be holding events across the state.

For instance, they will be hosting a rally at the Wisconsin State Capitol, 2 East Main St. in Madison, on Saturday, March 6, at 10 a.m.

While fasting can be challenging on one’s health, the group assures the community in their release they have a medical professional advising them on their fast.
