Alvin owens serves community with ‘collective’

KENOSHA ⏤ Known for his amazing haircuts and involvement in local activism supporting communities of color, Alvin D. Owens has done it all.

He’s from cut hair in his front yard, worked in public relations, and has been employed in the education field.

Regimen Barber Collective

A resident of Kenosha for over 25 years off and on, Owens ⸺ a local barber ⸺ has big plans for the future of his shop, The Regimen Barber Collective.

Owens’ vision for the Collective started six years ago, and a good friend helped with the wording of what now is The Regimen Barber Collective. However, many citizens around Kenosha have come to know his barbershop simply as “The Collective” for short.

Seen to many in the community as an uncle to look up to, Owens hopes to provide a regimen to the young adults. His broad range of experience allows him to be able to provide a collective of sorts, such as a great retail experience and resources within the community.

“The vision that I had for what I’m doing with barbering is bigger than what I had started with, just cutting somebody’s hair,” he said.

Legacy Lab

More than just a barbershop, Owens plans to open his Legacy Lab that will provide a way for people to look for jobs and resources while students can do homework and even play video games.

In fact, the community has already helped Owens in starting his Legacy Lab.

Two computers have been donated to the Legacy Lab so far, and Owens believes that this is only the beginning. The lab still needs four Chromebooks before it can open, he said.

“I wanted a home base for everything that is a part of me,” Owens said.

Owens big on education

Owens is very big on education and is a mentor to middle school students within the Kenosha Unified School District.

His yearly college tours to historically-Black colleges and universities are very popular amongst the students and adults alike. Due to COVID-19, he postponed the tour last year.

However, he hopes for a small trip in the fall, and even spring break of next year.

Young adults that are looking to visit the colleges with Owens can be what he calls “junior chaperones”. You can sign up at the Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha, requiring only a background check.

Owens’ also holds “Men’s Health and Wealth” days when business owners, entrepreneurs and many others from a broad range of different industries can get to know each other.
