KENOSHA ⏤ What’s something we all have, but few admit to? The answer ⏤ or at least one of them ⏤ is bias.
As the Rev. Dr. Monica Cummings of Bradford UU Community Church puts it: Bias isn’t inherently bad. In fact, Cummings points out that our ancestors used bias in order to assess situations and survive.
However, when entering the field of racial bias, often many, again, have a bias. And again, few would admit it ⏤ and many don’t even truly realize it.

Addressing local racial bias
On the other hand, for those who do have questions about their own racial biases, CUSH Community Organizer Lori Hawkins and Cummings have a safe space for you to do so.
Cummings and CUSH kicked off a series addressing racial bias through its Common Read earlier this week on Oct. 18. The series is based around the book “Small Great Things” by Jodi Picoult.
“Reading is divided into manageable monthly chunks as we prepare for important conversations about this book, our community, and ourselves,” CUSH explains on its website. “Through book discussions, we will address how bias plays a role in our everyday lives. Our goal is to come together in conversation and self discovery to help grow a more equitable community here in Kenosha.
“We are all a work in progress, and this program is an opportunity for us to progress together.”
Last week, the Observer sat down with Dr. Cummings and Hawkins to discuss the series and what they’d like to see accomplished through their local efforts.
