KENOSHA COUNTY ⏤ During a Wednesday meeting, Kenosha County Board Chairman John O’Day announced his selection of Twin Lakes attorney Kim Lewis to fill the vacant District 23 supervisor position.

Supervisor Lon Wienke previously served the district until his death March 3, 2021

The County Board ultimately approved the appointment with 13 voting in favor and two voting against. Three County Board supervisors ⏤ Dist. 3 Sup. Jeff Gentz, Dist. 8 Sup. Zach Rodriguez and Dist. 12 Sup. Gabe Nudo ⏤ chose to abstain.

Rose praises Lewis appointment

Dist. 2 Sup. Terry Rose praised Lewis’ appointment, reflecting on knowing Lewis professionally and personally.

He described Lewis as a “practical individual who is easy to get along with.”

“After knowing Mr. Kim Lewis since 1984, I would endorse his candidacy as a sensible, well-rounded individual,” Rose, a fellow attorney, said.

Rodriguez clarifies abstention due to ordinance

Rodriguez, prior to the board’s vote, took a minute to explain his position on the issue. In a brief statement, he clarified that he would be voting against the item due to how the county’s ordinance governing board vacancies is written.

He further expressed that he believes that the current method cuts the public out of the process of selecting the new supervisor who will replace those who die in office.

Though Rodriguez stated that he would vote “nay,” he later chose instead to abstain along with Gentz and Nudo.

Both supervisors who voted nay ⏤ Dist. 15 Sup. Amy Mauer and Dist. 21 Sup. Mark Nordigian ⏤ did not comment as to the reason why during the meeting.

Lewis will be officially “seated” on the County Board at its next meeting.
