Chief Miskinis updates community on efforts to arrest August rioters

KENOSHA ⸺ Kenosha Police Chief Daniel Miskinis gave an update on his department’s efforts to arrest those who participated in riots in the city in August 2020.

Miskinis also pointed out a fact that is sure to be bitter for some to swallow: Out of the 55 arrested for various crimes so far, Kenoshans make up 35.

Those crimes include:

  • Arson;
  • Burglary;
  • Conspiracy to commit theft of narcotics;
  • Possession of firearm/ammunition by a convicted felon;
  • Battery;
  • Criminal damage;
  • And disorderly conduct.

Riots sparked by police shooting

The riots the charges result from occurred following the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

On Aug. 23, 2020, Kenosha Police Department officer Rusten Sheskey shot Blake seven times. Months later, Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley ultimately chose not to charge Sheskey with any crime.

What followed the shooting included tense nights between residents and police, erupting in riots for two nights before shifting to very strained and outright adversarial interactions, as witnessed on live social media video feeds.

Miskinis expects more arrests

Now, the KPD is continuing to work to arrest everyone who “defiled this city,” Miskinis said.

“There are many more suspects to be identified who may well be from outside the area, making identification more difficult,” Miskinis said in a released statement.

“But we are not going to let that dissuade us – the victims of the violence deserve our efforts.”
