Kenosha Police Department officer, passenger uninjured in rollover crash at 52nd Street and 22nd Avenue Sunday

KENOSHA ⸺ A vehicle struck a Kenosha Police Department SUV at the intersection of 52nd Street and 22nd Avenue Sunday, shutting down the intersection for a period of time.

According to Sgt. Leo Viola of the KPD, emergency personnel responded to the scene at approximately 1:15 p.m.

The investigation showed that, prior to the crash, the officer had been stopped at a red light. At that time, the officer was heading eastbound on 52nd Street with a person in custody in the back. They were headed to the Kenosha County Jail.

As they crossed through the intersection, another vehicle traveling south on 22nd Avenue ran a red light and struck the squad car on its driver’s side.

Police officer, passenger checked and released

As a result, the force caused the KPD squad to roll over on its side. Emergency crews extricated both the officer and their passenger. Both were transported to the hospital and later released.

The KPD reported no serious injuries at the scene.

Officers issued the offending driver a citation for failing to stop at the red light.

However, police do not believe that they were impaired, and they stopped after the crash.
