#HumanityCenteredSaturday: A sit-down with ‘Mama’ Arnetta Griffin

KENOSHA ⏤ Known as “Mama” in her community, Arnetta Griffin has been working to better Kenosha, doing God’s work.

With First Step Warming Center shutting down in May 2017 and her own experience as a single mother, Griffin wanted to make a difference in people’s lives.

After she went through her own trials and tribulations, Griffin, a religious woman, spoke with God about homelessness, and as she puts it, he showed her the path to help others.

As a result, she created God’s Kitchen of Kenosha.

God’s Kitchen created in 2017

God’s Kitchen has been serving the hungry with home cooked meals for about four years now.

As the people in her community struggle, especially during the pandemic, Griffin has a mission to feed anybody that is in need in Kenosha’s Uptown neighborhood. While serving her community homemade meals, she is also aware that her guests need to be heard. She regularly listens to them.

Griffin also takes the time to understand the people in her community, and even risks her life to give out hugs when it’s needed.

Griffin has even helped to get a hotel room for one of her guests before.

Kenosha ‘has a heart for people’

If she doesn’t have the resources to help someone, she will find it. However, while she organizes everything, most of those resources come from the community.

“Kenosha definitely has a heart for people,” Griffin expressed.

Every Saturday Griffin hands out boxes of food at 8 a.m. outside the old K-Mart building in Kenosha, 4100 52nd St. Likewise, the community consistently comes out to help hand out those boxes.

What she needs

Griffin spends a lot of her own money to fund her efforts, even going to the store to pick out items requested by those she serves.

Diapers, wipes and socks for adults and kids are usually the most requested ⸺ and are also the items she needs most at this time.

Monetary donations can also go a long way, too, and can be made on God’s Kitchen’s website.

If call outs for donations over the COVID-19 pandemic have shown anything, it is that there is definitely a need in Kenosha for the work that Griffin is doing.
